Foolproof Caramel Apple Pie

Baked Carmel Apple

Put your own spin on classic apple pie with a caramelized glaze that will get your guests thinking you slaved in the kitchen all day.

Now you can spend the day preparing your own crust, but why reinvent the wheel! Store bought crust works fantastic in this recipe.

Adapted from All Recipes
Ingredients:
-1 recipe pastry for a 9" double crust pie (substitute store bought dough)
-1/2 cup unsalted butter
-3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-1/4 cup water
-1/2 cup white sugar
-1/2 cup packed brown sugar
-4 Granny Smith Apples peeled, cored, sliced
-4 Red Apples peeled, cored, sliced

Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar, brown sugar, and *apple pie spices. Bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let simmer.

Place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice work crust. Gently pour the sugar and butter liquid over the crust. Pour slowly so that it does not run off.

Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F. Continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.

*Make your own apple pie spice with:
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp cardamom

I like to use a combination of red/green apples.  It makes a nice combination and not too tart.  For this recipe I used Arkansas Black Apples & Granny Smith Apples.
delicious apple pie
As you can see my lattice work is not perfect, but no one will notice. I promise!

After baking serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

These apples we were lucky to pick on our way home from a walk!
Perfect fall Georgia day!
